The 22nd Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed on March 21, 1938 in the Trans-Baikal Military District on the basis of the 21st separate fighter squadron. It included five air squadrons with, and was part of the 23rd Fighter Aviation Brigade of the Trans-Baikal Military District. During the Great Patriotic War it was a part of the Trans-Baikal Front. From the beginning of the Great Patriotic War until August 9, 1945, it trained pilots for combat operations at the fronts. The regiment took part in the battles at Khalkhin-Gol. In May 1939, in the battles over Khalkhin-Gol, it lost a large number of pilots and was replenished by the 32nd Fighter Aviation Regiment pilots. Meanwhile, in the battles with the Japanese Air Forces, this regiment was one of the most successful regiments of the Soviet Air Force.
