In 1974, Lima and Moscow signed an agreement for delivery of 32 Sukhoi Su-20M single-seaters and two Su-22U trainers. The first of Su-20Ms arrived in June 1977, and entered service as “Su-22”, with the Escuadrón de Caza 111, based in Talara. This “Fitter” served with the same unit until 11 February 1995, when it was shot down by an Ecuadorian Mirage F.1JA while underway to attack Ecuadorian ground positions in the Alto Canepa area.
