In 1999, the No.93 Squadron IrAF deployed a number of specially modified MiG-23MLs. The fighters in question were equipped with SPO-10 RWRs and ASO-2 chaff & flare dispensers taken from retired Su-22s. They could also take French-made Remora ECM-pods (see insert) on their starboard underwing pylons. The port underwing pylon was reserved for R-24R missiles. In this configuration, MiG-23MLs of the No.93 Squadron became involved in several encounters with US fighters and UAVs, between other Grumman F-14 Tomcats of the US Navy, as well as McDonnell/Boeing F-15 Eagles and General Atomics RQ-1 Predators of the US Air Force.
