Fighter Squadron EIGHT FOUR - VF-84 “Jolly Rogers” USS Nimitz (CVN-68), 1981
VF-84 converted to the F-14As in mid-April 1976, and was to proudly apply a massive skull-and-crossbones on their fins, showing this during confrontations with Iran and Libya, as well as the making of the movie “The Final Countdown”. This “Tomcat” was delivered to VF-84 on 20 August 1977, and assigned as CAG bird of CVW-8 for Nimitz Med/IO Cruises, in 1979 and 1981. On 19 August 1981, shortly after two Libyan Su-22s were shot down by VF-41’s F-14As, CO VF-84 Cdr. Eduard Andrews, took off in this aircraft, armed with two AIM-54A “Phoenix” missiles. Commander Andrews expected for Libyan Arab Air Force to deploy its powerful MiG-25PD “Foxbat” interceptors with intention of avenging the loss of two Sukhois. In such a case, he wanted to be there ready to deploy AIM-54 “Phoenix” missiles. Eventually, no “Foxbats” appeared on that day.
